Y.T.F. Tiān Lóng

With the largest resources in Asia, China produced the Tiān Lóng, but not to donate to the colony. Like Egypt’s Ra, the Tiān Lóng is making the round trip. China picked a lot of the crew, but like all the countries, they had no say on the colonists, even the colonists doubling as crew.

The Crew

These are the brave men and women assigned to man stations on the ships, ferrying the equally brave men, women and children, who shall colonize Mars to their destination. Some are there for a round-trip to Mars, then right back to Earth. Still others are not just officers, but colonists, themselves.

Non-Colonist

Captain

Aung Kyaw

Aung Kyaw is from Burma and was selected to lead the ship, because Burma is largely uninvolved with the tensions between North and South Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan. He is a no-nonsense character, who knows how to lead, without being overbearing.

Doctor

Accupuncturist Qíng Bào

He is as offbeat as they come. Always grinning, or at least happy, he exaggerates his accent when speaking to Westerners and is constantly joking. But as far as knowledge of how to put people under, heal diseases and other ailments just by pressing on or poking people with a needle in the right place, there’s no one better.  However acupressure and acupuncture are not the only things he’s familiar with. He’s also well versed in surgery and pathology. Yes. He’s the colony’s coroner.

The Passengers

These are the colonists who have much to offer on Mars, but have little to offer when it comes to running a spaceship, aside from an ability to adapt rapidly and learn.

Colonist

Educator

Zhāng Yǔ

He is the entire colony’s educator. This is largely because he is capable of speaking every language represented in the fleet, teaching a wide range of subjects to a wide range of ages all in the same room. He also uses Skype education on the journey and engages his class to speculate and theorize as much as he imparts his knowledge to them. He’s a student of science, mathematics, history, culture, politics, biology and many, many more subjects. He’s the only man for the job, which is why he was allowed, even though his teaching practices are very different from most schools. His ethnic background is mysterious as he is fluent in most of the languages he teaches.

The Hwa Rang Do specialist. He’s skilled in fighting and healing as per tradition of his field of expertise and is from yes, North Korea. He’s the Checkov in this situation. The enemy by birth, who is really on our side. Loyal and dedicated to honor and justice. Yi Han-sol is the only one with a chance of uniting Fredrick and Farouk, without blood-shed. He’s willing to train anyone who wants to, in the methods of the Hwa Rang Do or Flowering Knights. He’s a dedicated father of his son and widower.

Colonist

Astronomer

Lěng Yán

He’s the Tiān Lóng’s astronomer with a good eye for long-distance objects and is going to Mars, because he needs to leave China for sake of his second illegal child on the way. He chose Mars, because he saw twenty years ago, a strange sight through his telescope. Possibly a small alien space-ship over Earth. However he’s convinced himself for the most part that it was a very odd asteroid. (He really did see a spaceship over Earth. In the companion series Trials of Telepathy, the occupants of that ship are the stars under cover on Earth.) He is humble and the kind who looks at the world the way it is, because it is, without trying so hard to understand it that it ultimately defeats the purpose.

Attorney

Nángōng Yǔ

She is the only legal tycoon in the whole fleet. An international lawyer of the highest class, who insisted that a Martian colony needs a lawyer on call, so as to be able to defend them from abuses leveled by those on Earth. While investors didn’t want to allow her to go, because of that, both her husbands having sufficient skill to back up their assignments, allowed her to go as merely a “wife” despite the fact her law and court room experience is a huge asset to those who actually want this colony to be an independent nation.

Lěng Qǐ xīng

She is the daughter of  Lěng Yán and  Zhào Yù Míng. She’s got a personality to lead even though she’s one of the youngest students on the ship. She’s the one who always wants to try the next thing and move on to the next thing. Always eager and anxious to learn and grow. She’s also very interested in astral projection and other more mystical aspects of real life, especially once she sees her very powerful spirit guide on the colony and needs Brad to explain what she saw. It’s unknown if her ability to see spirit guides will grow into seeing the dead.
